Which methods are used in the treatment of aortic aneurysm?

Aortic aneurysm is an enlargement of the wall of the aorta, the main artery that carries blood to the body. There is approximately 50% more enlargement than normal. There are several methods used in the treatment of aortic aneurysm. These methods are evaluated by considering other factors such as the region where the aneurysm is located, the level of the disease, etc. The methods used in the treatment of aortic aneurysm can be listed as follows;

Surgical Repair:

Surgical repair of aortic aneurysm is a major operation. The location of the aneurysm, the extent of the aneurysm and the additional problems of the patient are the factors that determine how surgical repair can or cannot be performed. While surgical repair is a must in the ascending aorta and arcus aorta, surgical repair may be required in some cases in the descending aorta and abdominal aorta.

Surgical repair can be performed with large incisions or small incisions depending on the region of the aneurysm. For example, in abdominal aortic aneurysms, a large abdominal incision is used, while in ascending aortic aneurysms, surgical repair can be performed through a large incision in the sternum or a small incision in the armpit.

Endovascular Repair:

Endovascular aneurysm repair is one of the methods used in aneurysm treatment. It is also known as endovascular stent graft method. It is an angiographic method. In order to strengthen and repair the artery, a stent-graft is placed into the aneurysm and the aneurysm pressure is reduced. Endovascular repair does not require large incisions in the abdomen or chest. Generally, a small incision is made in the groin and stent-graft placement is performed angiographically. The aneurysm is not removed, but a special stent is placed inside to prevent expansion. This allows the blood to flow freely through the aorta. The average operation time varies between 3-4 hours.

Endovascular method has many advantages compared to open surgery. These advantages can be listed as follows;

  • Since small incisions are used, the healing and discharge process can be faster.
  • The patient provides great comfort during the recovery period and physical movements. The patient returns to social life faster. The danger to life is much lower than open surgeries.
  • This method is not suitable for every patient. You can find out the most suitable treatment method for you by consulting a cardiovascular surgeon.
  • Tissue and blood loss is less.
  • The risk of infection is less.
  • The possibility of complications is low.
  • This method may also be suitable for the elderly and groups that may be considered at risk due to certain health problems.

Medication Therapy:

In some cases, medication such as blood pressure-lowering drugs may be recommended to slow the rate of aneurysm progression and reduce the risk of complications. You can get information about drug treatment by consulting your cardiovascular surgeon.

In the treatment of aortic aneurysm, which form of treatment is appropriate for the patient may vary depending on many factors. It is determined by looking at various factors such as the patient’s age, general health status, chronic diseases, current state of the disease, etc. and performing the necessary tests. You can find out which treatment method is suitable for you by consulting a Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist and start the treatment process.
