What is Aortic Aneurysm?

An aneurysm is defined as an enlargement of the aortic vessel diameter by more than 50%. The larger the aneurysm, the more severe the consequences will be.

What are the consequences of aortic aneurysm?

The consequences of aortic aneurysm vary from patient to patient. These changes usually depend on the size of the aneurysm, the location, the age of the patient and the possibility of rupture of the aneurysm.  Possible consequences of aortic aneurysm can be listed as follows;

  1. Risk of rupture (rupture): Aortic aneurysms can rupture. If the aneurysm ruptures, internal bleeding can occur and the risk of internal bleeding can be life-threatening. Therefore, the possibility of rupture, which may result in death, requires urgent intervention.
  2. Risk of dissection: This occurs when blood fills through a tear in the wall of the aneurysm and spreads through the walls of the aorta. This condition varies depending on the level of the aneurysm. It is a condition that requires urgent intervention and may result in sudden death.
  3. Aortic Valve Failure: Aneurysms that occur in the region where the aortic vessel exits the heart (ascending aorta) can cause the aortic root to expand and cause insufficiency in the aortic valves. This prevents the blood from returning to the aorta and valve insufficiency may evolve into heart failure.
  4. Embolism A clot can form in the aortic aneurysm and the clots thrown from it can cause embolism further down the arteries. The clots may be dragged through the blood vessels and may cause blockage of the arteries. This can lead to circulatory system problems.
  5. Compression Symptoms: Advanced aortic aneurysms can cause compression symptoms. The main symptoms of this condition are; difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness in voice, shortness of breath, etc. symptoms.

In cases where aortic aneurysm is not treated, the above-mentioned vital consequences may occur. Aneurysms that have not progressed too much can be controlled with the follow-up of a Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist and possible risks are reduced. It is important for patients with aortic aneurysm disease to quit smoking, limit alcohol use, pay attention to the recommended medication, do the recommended sports, eat a balanced diet and have an ideal weight.

Surgical procedure may be required for advanced aneurysms. If you have symptoms of aortic aneurysm, it is extremely important to consult a Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist and start the treatment process early.
